12 years of education

As well as in Kristianstad itself, there are primary schools in the towns of Arkelstorp, Degeberga, Fjälkinge, Tollarp, Vä, Åhus and Önnestad. Kristianstad  also offers a broad scope of secondary school education.

All 6-year-olds have the option of starting school in mixed-age groups, where the teachers work closely with child minders, pre-school teachers and child care personnel. Recreational centres and after-school clubs are integrated into the schools. Both municipal and private education is available and a number of schools place special emphasis on aspects such as music or Montessori teaching methods.

There are six municipal high schools and one independent school in Kristianstad. These schools teach all Swedish national curricula and run a range of programmes for young people with special interests. Secondary school education in Sweden is paid for by the State.

All the schools are located centrally except the agricultural high school, which is in Önnestad and the golf high school, which is in Åhus.

The Municipality of Kristianstad is one of only four in Sweden to have a National High School, an institution designed especially for young people with severe physical disabilities. The local authorities also provide accommodation, with 42 places in five student halls.
